Dear Village Neighbor / Friend

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you also enjoy family and friends in your home and at your table. Suzanne and I are blessed with a few days with our daughter, USCGA 2/C Katrina Cooley. They grow up fast; don’t they?

Republic Trash Service – I trust you also received the call saying no service today; will resume next Monday for household trash. If you intend to sign on with the new deal from them and haven’t yet – reminder – it is due by 8 December. I suppose you can join them whenever, but for maximum savings – git ‘er done!

Rolling Road Project – No, the sky isn’t falling, but practically every time I mention the project, someone will pipe up stating unawareness of the pending effort to widen RR. In my opinion we have to be prepared for the worst knowing that it won’t be. VDOT will do the project in phases all-the-while keeping at least one lane open for northbound (NB) and also southbound (SB) traffic. Expect some go around or more cut through traffic as drivers seek ways to avoid flagmen. Those living away from RR should prepared to accept RR homeowner cars parked curbside in front of interior village homes. Anytime utilities are relocated – we stand a good chance of service interruption, but the utility companies are on board and interruptions should be minimal.

Most importantly, we need to communicate RR access closings and changes to daily plans. VDOT is again talking to me. I expect they will convey changes as they happen during the project. I would love to be able to send their messages directly to all in the village.

The noise abatement barriers will certainly change the landscape, but we see them everywhere now. VDOT has assured me that the noise walls will not amplify nose and reflect very little. VDOT sent links to noise walls and also to the property acquisition process. Knowing what will happen and the process for that to happen are critical to preparation. Here’s the links: http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/pr-noise-walls-about.asp and http://www.virginiadot.org/business/resources/Right_of_way/A_Guide_for_Property_Owners_and_Tenants.pdf.

It ain’t all gloom, doom and despair on RR. Suppose we need to focus on getting ready hoping the outcome will actually benefit our village. Encourage all to be at the VDOT meeting 6:30 – 8-30 PM, 30 November in the cafeteria at Rolling Valley Elementary School.

Visit the Chipotle location at 6230 Rolling Road (next to the Panera and Merchant's Tire) and mention RVES Spirit Night and 50% (!!) of the proceeds will support RVES PTA! If you order online, be sure to pay IN STORE and mention the cause or your order won't count.

  • Glory Days - Anytime! When you dine out at Glory Days, please save your original itemized receipt and donate it to RVES PTA. The PTA will get a portion of the checks paid donated back. Receptacles located at RVES, or you can contact CarlaSpitler@gmail.com and she can arrange a time to pick them up from you. Every dollar counts!

Civic Association Membership – Thanks again for joining or renewing your membership in our civic association.

Leaves - We only had one young man on the list willing to do these type jobs, but lost him to school and sports. Seems like the right time of the year for young people to make good money or to accrue community service credit raking and bagging leaves. Anyone else want free advertisement about your leaf raking business.

B.Rushing Lawn and Landscaping – A neighbor asked for a recommendation for professional yard work. Jane Ray (Landor) responded with the company that does her yard: mowing, edging, mulching, trimming hedges, cleaning out flower beds and they even plant flowers for me in the spring and fall. Jane says she has used them since 1999 and very pleased with their workmanship. They can be reached at 703/339-0067 or http://www.b-rushing.com/). Thanks for sharing with us Jane.

Happy Thanksgiving West Springfield Village!
