Village News 2/16/17

Dear Village Neighbors / Friends,

Not much this week, but here goes.

Real Estate Property Assessments – Just received my property assessment and it did not change from last year. That normally means we can expect an increase in the tax levy. I doubt they can stick to the $1.13 per hundred levy given expected $4.1 Billion budget for the county. It is like a drunken dance – increase the assessment and hold the levy without increase or hold the assessment at the same and increase the levy. And there are times when the assessment and the levy are both increased. I can’t recall ever a time when either the assessment or the levy were reduced. Can you? Expect county to soon announce the amount of levy; once they do – they can’t go above that amount. Get ready!

Rolling Road Update– We were late last week in getting the enews out due to a tardy response from VDOT about burying the utility cables along the project corridor and when they expect to host the first public hearing where they’ll brief their final design plans. And the holdup was/is waiting for some pending legislation from Richmond that may actually fund the costs of burying the utility cables also Rolling Road. Delegate Dave Albo does not expect funding to be available for this purpose during this project, but did admit that they and the utility companies are negotiating on burying the cables with expected cost savings with a smaller project footprint than was briefed to us in our meetings. Anyhow, expect the Public Information Briefing soon where we’ll compete to be heard with folks up north of Old Keene Mill Road who want the road widened no matter the cost to properties along the roadbed. You may recall that PH I of the project is to start this spring. For more information, send me an email. Not much factual information, but glad to see they heard us and are trying.

Correction - Last week we mentioned a West Springfield ES PTA Fundraiser at Chipotle in Springfield Plaza (right beside Panera Bread). The actual date for this event is Tuesday, 21 February. 50% of the proceeds from your meal will be donated to the WSES PTA. Remember to bring the flier (attached and available online at Or you should be able to simply tell them you are with WSES PTA.

Contractor Recommendation: Bob Lomax (Edmonton Court) in his own words:

Last week Collins Concrete Coatings put down a coating on my garage floor. Collins uses a polyaspartic coating by Sparacote. It is different from an epoxy floor coating that you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's and it's more durable. Spartacote gives you a three-year warranty on labor and materials.

I recommend Collins Concrete Floors if you’re thinking about a concrete floor coating. Collins employees arrived on time, were professional in advising me along the entire process what to expect and had the job completed in a day (two car garage). You can walk on the floor after two hours and park your car on it after 24 hours.  The floor coatings can be applied in 40 degrees or warmer temps, inside or out. They have a number of different colors to choose from.  If interested, contact owner Buck Collins at 703/907-9655. Their website is They are offering $200 off your coating project.
