Village News, 5/24/18

Dear Village Neighbors / Friends,

Pool Party and Barbeque – This Saturday, 26 May at the Village West Pool. Your Civic Association and the Village West Pool co-host this event and invite all to join the fun, regardless of membership in either organization. Your CAWSV will provide sodas, water, chips and cookies for free to complement typical grill food sold by the Pool Board at very modest prices. The grill will be run 1 – 3:00 PM and again 5 – 7:00 PM. We ask that families provide a small side dish (potato salad, baked beans, melon, salad, deviled eggs, cookies, etc) to complement hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers. Request only – not a requirement. Please include a disposable serving utensil. Family members of deployed service members will eat for free.

Throughout Memorial Day weekend, the pool is open to the entire community at no cost  you don't have to be a member of the pool or the civic association to join in the fun! The pool’s Memorial Day weekend hours of operation are: Saturday 12 – 9:00 PM, Sunday 12 – 8 PM, and Monday 12 – 6 PM.

Rolling Valley Elementary School's 50th Anniversary Celebration - Saturday, 2 June from 5:00 - 7:30 PM. If your business would like to be part of this very special event, email mboland@fcps.edu or ptarollingvalley@gmail.com to find out more about both cash and in-kind sponsorship opportunities!

Community Cleanup and Last Chance Corral - 9 June from 8 – 12:00 Noon. I’d like to have you in line starting at 7:30 AM so we can optimize our time with the county crews. This event is for Civic Association West Springfield Village members only, but membership forms will be on site for those still wanting to join. If you join there, you’ll be asked to pay $20.00 membership dues for this membership/fiscal year and next.

Unwanted items that still have useful life will first be placed in the Last Chance Corral where anyone can take them for free. Every year we have wonderful treasures in the LCC making it worth your while to stop by to shop. Items not taken by 11:45 AM will be fed to the Jaws of Junk.

We will need volunteers and pickup trucks to help move certain items from curb to the site. We will help civic association members who need assistance, but will not have time to move items from homes. If you need help, let me know (john.t.cooley@verizon.net) and have someone there to help load and at least make sure we take what you intended. Please let me know in advance if you are willing to work the cleanup and if you have a pickup you’ll volunteer.

2018 West Springfield Village Home and Garden Tour –Calling all village homeowners! Would you like to show your home or garden? Don't hesitate! Contact Tim at troyster1108@gmail.com or 571/275-0871 by 1 June 2018. You pick which part of your home/yard you want to show. We’ll start at 6905 Smyth Street on 16 June and end no later than 1:00 PM.

This is a free self-guided tour showcasing some of our West Springfield Village properties. In 1966, Richmarr Construction Corporation began building what would become the 423 homes that comprise West Springfield Village. The five basic, original home models are the King, Queen (A or B), Prince, Duchess and Duke. Some believe we also have a Princess model, but not sure if it is one of the Queen versions. Later newer models were added to the east side of Rolling Road and also east of the previously built homes.

As times changed over the past 50 years, the homes and gardens in our village have also changed. This is a great opportunity to learn about the home or garden improvements and their unique challenges, share creative DIY projects and inspire others to start their own projects.

The tour will begin at 6905 Smyth Street where maps of the showcased properties will be distributed. Please note that this is a self-guided tour. We do not announce the homes in advance. Please pick up a map at 6905 Smyth Street and start touring the homes at your own pace. The event will be held rain or shine.

See you on the tour!

Oh Crap! – It’s time for my favorite subject – dog poop. County has a pooper scooper law which requires dog handlers to pick up what your dog deposits, especially what he/she drops on neighbors’ yards. And, we know that collected dog poop does not belong in our drinking water so don’t throw collection bags into storm water intakes. And, it is very discourteous to put those collection bags in a neighbor’s trash or recycling toter. Why not cover it all – county also has a leash law which means your dog needs to be on leash under control when out of your home and/or enclosed yard. OK – one more item – barking dogs during quiet hours (10:00 PM – 7:00 AM) is a nose complaint. In fact, barking, howling, meowing, squawking or quacking animals between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM when it can be heard inside a home with its doors and windows closed for more than five minutes consecutively or non-consecutively during a 10-minute period. Enough said; right?

Happy Birthday! Amanda G. Cooley, Fort Collins, Colorado

Congratulations! Sarah Cooley will soon be married to Mr. Jessie Broward in Hawaii. And, Katrina Cooley is now a Firstie at the USCGA.

Surely I am not the only one with joyous family news. None of my people have been compromised by being included in the village news. Send it to me!

Stay safe. Come join the fun at upcoming events.
