Village News, 9/7/17

Dear Village Neighbors / Friends,

Civic Association Membership Drive – We hope you will join our civic association or renew your membership. Dues are again $10.00 for Fiscal/Membership Year 2018, which begins 1 October 2017 and ends 30 September 2018. The membership form can be found on our website (, is attached to this email and will be included in the September Village Crier. The form lists payment instructions to include mailing address. You can also pay online using PayPal by clicking “Here” to pay $11.00 via PayPal – the extra $1.00 covers the cost of PayPal processing. Once you join or renew, you will no longer receive recurring email reminders for this drive. What better motivation can I offer to get it done sooner rather than later?

We welcome your ideas to improve our civic association. Contact Membership Chair Julia Hale (, John Cooley ( or any on the board of directors or executive committee for more information about our organization. Our membership objective remains at 75%, but our goal is 100%. Talk to your neighbors, especially the new ones about the benefit the village receives from our civic organization.

Hurricane Preparedness – We may get some of Hurricane Irma middle next week if it bends right into the Atlantic Ocean as predicted. We’re far enough off the coast that it should only be some wind and rain or nothing at all, but should be enough to give us pause to review our preparedness. Food, ice, water, batteries, charged cell phones, filled bath tubs, emergency phone numbers, tree pruning and whatever else you need to hunker down. My daughter was in Katy, TX for Harvey and she now knows that an ounce of prevention/preparation is indeed worth a pound of cure/recovery. She and her family are fine, but she has a new admiration for her father's constant badgering trying to get them ready.

Indoor Sports Complex Coming to Springfield - the 450,000 square foot center at 6805 Industrial Road will include facilities for hockey, basketball, volleyball, baseball, swimming, climbing, gymnastics, golf, squash, health medicine and relaxation. And a restaurant, virtual reality gaming, trampolines and a water park, but no indoor track due to lack of room. But there will be lots of treadmills and a fitness center. The complex is scheduled to open in September 2018. Thanks for Kathy D’Amato (Barnack) for this report.

On these dates, new swimmers will meet the coaching staff and current team members, take a brief swim test (must be able to swim at least 25 yards unassisted in deep water), learn some introductory synchro skills, and get a taste of what the sport is all about. If the swimmer is interested in joining the NVN team, swimmers will also be assessed by the coaches and placed into the appropriate swim groups according to age and ability.

If you are interested in trying out, please sign up at:

You can also register by sending an email to with your name, your swimmer's name and birthdate, and your contact information.

What if you'd like to try out but can't make it during “Try Synchro?” That's totally fine! Email Angie Walker, NVN Membership Coordinator at or submit an inquiry via the form above and we'll be in touch. Hope to see you at the pool!

A Fundraiser That May Interest You – We have a village young lady (Julia Mast, Edmonton Court) trying her best to make it into collegiate ice hockey. To further her chances, her family sent her to a hockey academy in Idaho where she’ll finish her 12th grade and also prepare for college showcases and tryouts. Julia, nor her family asked to post this, but I like these David and Goliath stories. Julia is slight in frame, but has more heart and determination than most. Here’s the post to the fundraiser:

IRS Issues Ransomware Warning – Dan Emrick (SVD) sent a link about a bogus email supposedly from IRS and / or the FBI which directs tax payers to download a questionnaire regarding changes to the laws regarding tax compliance. However, it is no questionnaire at all. Instead, the user downloads ransomware. Here’s a link to the warning:
