Village News, 11/29/18

Dear Village Neighbor / Friend,

Looked like a fair exchange of leaves yesterday. A lot of mine blew into neighbors’ yards and about the same amount of their leaves found their way to my yard. Seems fair; right?

Security – It’s that time of the year when cars are broken into and personal property stolen, even Christmas displays and decorations. We’ve been relatively insulated from most crime, but once again some parked cars were broken into. If you are a victim – report the crime to our police department (703/691-2131) even if you might have not locked the car or unintentionally left valuables in plain sight in the locked vehicle.

2019 West Springfield Village Directory AdsSteve Hue at Printing Ideas asked again for our help in getting the rates and opportunity for ads out to potential advertisers. We are thankful for those who advertise since that allows us to get the directory at little or no cost. We also include directory advertisers on our website and in at least two enews during the year.

Here are the 2019 Community Directory ad rates:

  • Back cover (8x10") = $275.00
  • Inside Front or Back cover (8x10") - $225.00
  • Full page ad (8x10") - $150.00
  • Half page ad (5x8") - $100.00
  • Quarter page ad (4x5") - $65

Contact Steve ASAP to request type and size of ad and then email PDF or JPG ads to web@printingideas.com.

Winter Preparations – Recent temperatures got me to at least begin preparations for freezing wintry conditions. I bedded new trees with more mulch, turned off the water to outside spigots, drained garden hoses, and made sure my snow shovel is in good shape for another winter season. Have found that edged sidewalks are easier to shovel than where grass/weeds have grown out over the cement. My chimney needs to be inspected and the cap reinstalled. Furnace was serviced and go to go. Still need to drain gas from lawnmower and weed whacker. And, go through our vehicles for oil change, anti-freeze and tire check. What other things should we do before the first hard freeze or snow?

Snow Blower For Sale – Ariens Deluxe 24 – Hardly use; just in time for winter use. New it costs $1000 - $1200, selling it for $650.00. More information, pictures and specs can be found at https://www.ariens.com/en-us/snow-products/snow-blowers/deluxe/deluxe-24. Stop by 6902 Ontario Street to see it, but first call Bobbie McClain at 703/569-2850. This could become a money making adventure for some enterprising teenager.

Recycling - Instead of placing items in the recycling bin that you think may be recycled (wishful recycling) – put it instead into the trash bin. County does have the incinerator that significantly reduces what goes into a landfill.

  1. Only place empty, clean, dry, loose items in your recycling bin.
  2. No plastic bags, shredded paper, tanglers (hoses/hangers/cords), Styrofoam containers or dirty diapers (?).
  3. Purchase products made with high recycled content.
  4. When in doubt, throw it out as trash.
  5. Make an effort to reduce the amount of waste you create - reuse what you can.

Upcoming Village Events: 22 December – Christmas Caroling & Village Christmas Party – open to all, even those who can’t sing. Carolers will move from the Village West Pool to the Christmas Party at Don & Susan Cheney’s 6702 Ontario Street home. We’ve asked Santa Claus and his wife to stop by to deliver presents to the children whose parents pre-positioned a gift marked clearly with their child’s name.  Holiday Decorations judging dates and procedures will be announced soon.

Stay warm; stay safe!
