Village News, 8/1/19

Dear West Springfield Village Neighbor / Friend,

CAWSV FY20 Membership Drive – It’s that time again to join our civic association or to renew your membership. Annual dues are again $10.00 for Fiscal / Membership Year 2020. You can pay $11.00 using PayPal by clicking “Here”. Of course you can also pay $10.00 by check mailed to CAWSV, P.O. Box 2204, Springfield, VA 22152. Make check payable to “CAWSV”. The extra $1.00 if you use PayPal is to cover the charge PayPal exacts on all transactions. The form below shows the information we need with your directives about listing in our next directory. If you want to review what you had directed in this last year look at the FY19 Directory or email me. Here’s the information requested: Name of 1st Resident, Name of 2nd Resident, Address, Phone Number, Email Address. May we list your names and address in the director (Y or N), may we list your phone number (Y or N) and lastly may we list your email address (Y or N)?

GoDaddy Emails Work – From the responses received to last week’s enews, it looks like Webmaster Bob Havey found a winner in GoDaddy email service. Let me know if you did not receive last week’s enews. Our goal is to save administrative time, decrease frequency of failed messages and continue to protect our email addresses. Good job Bob!

Please note that all of the @westspringfieldvillage.org email addresses listed in our directory have been disabled for this service, except president@westspringfieldvillage.org and even that one no longer forwards messages into my Verizon inbox. I am also john.t.cooley@verizon.net and john.t.cooley@gmail.com. Preferred address for normal village communications is Verizon. If you reply to the enews, it will go to the godaddy inbox which is OK, but please cc john.t.cooley@verizon.net. And to remind you that you can find archived editions of the village news on our website (https://westspringfieldvillage.org/).

Parking Restrictions – Have received several complaints about parking in the village. All should know that the entire Springfield District is a Community Parking District (CPD) – which prohibits parking of watercraft, motor homes, campers, trailers, vehicles greater than or equal to 3 axles, vehicles with a GVWR greater than or equal to 12,000 lbs, and vehicles transporting greater than or equal to 16 passengers (except school buses) on village streets. Vehicles parked in violation are subject to a $75 fine for each violation and may be towed at the owner’s expense.

This does not apply to any commercial vehicle when discharging passengers or when temporarily parked pursuant to the performance of work or service at a particular location. Utility generators on trailers and being used to power network facilities during a loss of commercial power are also exempt as are restricted vehicles temporarily parked on a village street for the purpose of loading, unloading or preparing for a trip.

We may not park vehicles on front yards other than temporarily to load, unload, clean or repair that vehicle or trailer. There are many rules governing parking on Virginia streets, but the big ones are: parked cars must be facing in the direction of traffic flow must be properly tagged and registered with safety inspection sticker displayed and parked at least 10’ from driveway entrances. That last one is difficult for our narrow front lot.

Report parking violations by calling the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications Non-Emergency phone number at 703/691-2131, but first talk to your neighbor in an attempt to resolve without penalties, fines or towing. For more information - https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/parking/community-parking-districts.

Help Wanted – Civic Association Secretary – It will not take much of your time. You vote on Board of Directors decisions, attend the two village meetings to capture the minutes, prepare the minutes and distribute to the other meeting attendees. Once approved – post to our website (https://westspringfieldvillage.org/).

Current Secretary Ed Wyse will leave the village before our next meeting which means the BOD will appoint until we can ratify the BOD’s decision with membership vote at our 10 October meeting. Ed can be reached at ejwyse@yahoo.com if you want to discuss the position with him. Term of this appointment will be a one year plus a couple months unless you want to continue at the October 2020 meeting. If you are willing to serve our community as Secretary, please let me know (john.t.cooley@verizon.net). I should mention that all of us on the Board of Directors and on the Executive Council are volunteers serving without pay. You will need a computer and have email service. So – no pay for work performed over the next year plus – who wouldn’t want it?

National Night Out / Ice Cream Social – Next Tuesday, 6 August from 6 – 8:00 PM at the Village West Pool. We will again co-sponsor an ice cream social with the Village West Pool as our National Night Out. It will be open to all in the village, regardless of membership in our Civic Association or in the Pool. Pool Board of Directors will open the pool to all for swimming at 5:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM. I mean FREE ICE CREAM and a chance to SWIM – who wouldn’t want to join in the fun?
